Anglia TV: Interview with Sir Laurence Olivier regarding his role as the director of the National Theatre.
In the Anglia television studio at Norwich, Reporter Michael Robson interviews Sir Laurence Olivier, Director of the National Theatre. Olivier says that he hopes that the standard of the National Theatre in this country will allow people to discover the art of acting and make people have the same enthusiasm they get when they see an opera or a ballet. Robson asks him about the standard of his plays and whether he provides other theatres with the same standard as those in London. He replies that he ensures the standard of the plays are always high no matter the theatre they perform in. They discuss the plays he is working on such as ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’ and how he makes sure to follow the rule for National Theatre that they have one Shakespeare, one English classic, one recent classic, one English modern, one foreign modern and one foreign classic. He discusses different genres such as tragedy and melodrama. Robson then asks him about the play he has chosen to do next, Somerset Maugham’s ‘Home and Beauty.’ He answers that it is part of the tradition of National Theatre that they do a recent classic and also talks about how much he loves the play. They discuss how he chooses who has the leading parts and who has the smaller ones. He claims that he leans towards smaller roles now himself as he has so many other things to do with directing. In the next 10 years, he says that he would like to make a mark on the future through other people. He wants to create a National Theatre that will last forever.
