Anglia Television documentary profiling the passenger and cargo port at Harwich.

The popularity of Harwich as a sea-link to Europe led, in the late 19th century, to the transformation of mudflats and marshes at Parkeston and the establishment of a new port that would serve as a 'gateway to the east'. This documentary traces the history and modern operations of this busy port, carrying passengers and cargo to Europe and beyond. Interviews with officials and views of the port at work show the work behind the scenes, as motor cars are cleared for travel and passengers arrive on the 'boat train' from London Liverpool Street station, ready to board the MS Koningin Wilhelmina. Elsewhere, some of the 420,000 tons of cargo shifted through the port every year is unloaded, preparations are underway in nearby towns for the summer tourist trade, the staff of Trinity House are busy maintaining buoys and lightships and a longshore fishing boat returns to port.
