Six Fast Years

1965

Anglia Television programme made to mark the 6th anniversary of the opening of the M1 motorway.

Celebrating the sixth anniversary of the opening of the M1 motorway, the programme examines how it has affected the lives of the motorists who use it, and asks what these motorists think of Britain's first full-length motorway. Setting out from Northampton, the film follows a businessman who commutes to London via car every day, a lorry driver who delivers bricks right across central England, and a woman her two young male passengers on a shopping trip to London. The drivers share their views on the safety and economy of the motorway, as well as speaking of their concerns about other drivers. Ernest Marples, former Minister of Transport, discusses the planning, engineering and usage of the motorway, and we travel in a police car as it undertakes patrols. Later, two of the drivers stop at the conveniently located services, where they can rest and buy food at the transport cafe.
