'Farming Diary' visits a farm in Boxford, Suffolk in a look at England's apple industry.
A piece from ‘Farming Diary’ for Anglia Television. The reporter visits the Copella fruit farm near Boxford, Suffolk. The reporter talks about the looming possibility of Britain entering the European Economic Community, and considers the effect this might have on the livelihood of English apple growers, with imports easily available from countries such as France and Italy should Britain enter the Common Market. The reporter and the owner of the farm stroll across the orchard, where Cox apples grow. Indoor scenes of the grading line where apples are held in large wooden bins, each containing around 5000 apples. The bins are lowered into a water bath, which gently lifts the fruit. Shots of the apples floating in the water – which helps to wash the fruit. A special moving grid helps to separate different sizes of apples. A special song, composed to help in the marketing of the ‘British’ apple, plays as the apples move along the packaging line. The reporter talks about how due to European sizing grades, around half of the apples produced at this farm would not reach the market if Britain were to join the EEC. Apples that don’t meet the farm’s standards are mashed up into a pulp. This pulp is then pressed to extract the apple juice. The juice is then bottled. The reporter mentions that the owners of the farm hope that the profits made through the clever utilisation of this waste product may help counteract against financial difficulties they will experience when Britain enters the Common Market. The film is interesting in its insight into contemporary fears over Britain entering the EEC, specifically the fear that it would damage home industry.
