Ferrets

1981 , Holkham (Norfolk)

Anglia Television's Bygones series profiles ex-warrener and gamekeeper Basil Goffin.

Before myxomatosis nearly wiped out Britain's rabbit population, ferreting was a serious occupation. To see how it was done, Bygones correspondent Eddie Anderson visits the Norfolk village of Holkham to meet ex-warrener and gamekeeper Basil Goffin. In a thick Norfolk accent, Goffin introduces Anderson to ferretting, showing off his ferrets and leading him to holes, where they stalk rabbits armed only with a ferret, a shovel and Goffin's 'songs of praise' device, a radio receiver which picks up transmissions from the ferret's collar. Having caught half a dozen rabbits, the pair sit down to lunch and Goffin talks about his former life as a warrener and shares tips for finding rabbit holes and training ferrets.
