Interviews with Great Yarmouth holiday business owners about how they spend the winter.

This sequence for ‘About Anglia’ opens with a sheet of newspaper blowing across the empty tarmac in front of the deserted amusements at Botton’s Pleasure Beach, Great Yarmouth where a few staff are tidying up. The presenter Lionel Hampden speaks to camera to introduce the topic, where do amusement caterers go out of season. He interviews Mr Botton who explains they need to clean and overhaul the rides to get ready for the next season. Last year he went to Italy to acquire the flying saucers ride, and the previous year to Munich in Germany for the jet ride. Next to be interviewed is Mr Henningsworth (?) who runs a postcard and souvenir shop. Standing next to a postcard display, he explains that the town and the road where his shop is located ‘dies’ until Easter so he more or less closes up. Staff are on part time contracts, such as married women. The shop will re-open a month before Easter. Equally dapper in clothing and moustache is Mr Sutton (?) who runs a Bloater and Kipper Depot selling fish internationally. A successful introduction this year has been bloaters ready cleaned and boned. He says Yarmouth people may take a holiday, or go under the doctor, then take a rest over the winter. On the empty promenade, one coach is offering tours where eighteen coaches work in summer. Mr Machin, the driver, is interviewed. He is employed all year round, and is taking a chance that someone will take a trip to Norwich City. Lionel Hampden climbs aboard.
