Film In The Making: The Go-Between

1970 , Melton Constable (Norfolk)

Anglia Television report from the set of 'The Go-Between'.

In the grounds of the grand Melton Constable Hall, filming is underway on an adaptation of L.P. Hartley's novel 'The Go-Between', about the reminiscences of a teenage boy who spent the long, hot Norfolk summer of 1900 facilitating communication between a pair of forbidden lovers. The cast and crew are shown on set, filming a scene featuring Leo (the boy, played by Dominic Guard) laying beside a tree as a horse and cart pass in the background. As the crew prepare for the next shot, Julie Christie - who stars as Lady Marian Trimingham, one of the lovers - talks about her reasons for taking the role, including a desire to work with Harold Pinter's script and an admiration for director Joseph Losey, as well as her love of Norfolk and her rented cottage in Blakeney on the North Norfolk coast. Following another take, the film's American director - Joseph Losey - talks about shooting on location at Melton Constable Hall, the joys of having a 'mini-studio' at his disposal, and the challenges of filming in unpredictable weather. As the filming continues, another of the film's stars, Margaret Leighton, discusses her love of Norfolk and her husband's desire to move there from London. The item concludes with further shots of Melton Constable Hall.
