Anglia TV news item; vox pops on Norwich's London Street - Vic Birtles asks people's opinions on Britain joining the Common Market.
Anglia TV reporter Vic Birtles introduces the subject of the news item, the joining of the Common Market, by doing a piece to camera. Birtles refers to joining the Common Market as joining an expensive and exclusive club, and the benefits to “the man on the street” are a little “vague to say the least”. Birtles claims that “joining the club” would mean that food prices would increase. Birtles asks “what do people on the street really feel or know about the Common Market?” Vox pops on Norwich’s London Street with members of the public. The first gentleman, sporting a moustache and holding a pipe, answers he is yet to see how it will benefit the people of Norwich, or indeed the country as a whole. An elderly man with his wife complains that it will increase the price of food. A younger man argues that being part of a larger European community would be a good thing and Britain should take a lead. Another man with a woman argues “the club” already exists for nearly 20 years so what will it be? A man worries about Britain losing individuality and the high cost to the housewife and says a referendum should be held to decide. Returning to the interview with the moustached man, Vic Birtles says that it would widen our market and we wouldn’t have to worry about tariffs. The man argues that America is one of Britain’s biggest markets and don’t have to deal with the Common Market. Birtles asks, “but shouldn’t Britain go in to Europe to lead Europe?” the man replies, “I wouldn’t think so, we spend most of our time fighting it!” The reporter does a final piece to camera asking, how will the Government’s White Paper be received by farmers? and finishes “Over to Mallory Maltby of our farming staff”.
