Teenage entrants compete for the title of “East Anglian Young Gas Cook”. The contestants are busy working on the various stages of their menus – chopping tomatoes, and removing fairy cakes from the oven - as Fanny and Johnnie Cradock watch their progress. Judy Finnigan interviews chief judge Fanny Cradock about her expectations from the young competitors. She discusses what she perceives is a low standard of cooking in schools. Some of the contestants are interviewed about their experience of cooking, reasons for their interest in cooking, and their culinary ambitions for the future.
