Anglia TV news item; interviews with Beatniks in Great Yarmouth.

Reporter Michael Robson interviews local trader Mr Nichols about the beatniks in Great Yarmouth. Mr Nichols says that they are giving a bad example to the town. He says how his café loses trade as the customers don’t want to be near the beatniks who hang around near the seafront. Another trader, Mr Howes, says that they don’t abuse anyone and most of them are educated, but it is their appearance and smell which causes the problem. Robson then interviews a beatnik on the beach who says he has moved around a lot since he left school and hitchhikes from place to place as he doesn’t have any money. Close up of the group of beatniks on the beach sitting by a boat on the sand. He interviews another beatnik about how he walks around everywhere without any shoes and asks the attraction of land roving. He replies that it gives him a sense of freedom. They discuss what beatniks do on a day to day basis and how they don’t steal or live off other people’s taxes. He explains that local girls bring food down to the shelters that they stay in. Another beatnik explains why he chooses this way of life and how he doesn’t want to pay tax which goes towards things like nuclear weapons. They discuss how he refuses to fight with people over how he lives. Close up of a group of beatniks talking and walking along the beach. Pans over to the sea and zooms in on a ship.
