Anglia Television's 'Countryman' series visits Blakeney Point, the first nature reserve in Norfolk set up to protect a vast expanse of rare habitats for a range of wildlife.

Wardens watch over colonies of Common and Sandwich terns as they fish and raise chicks on the exposed, windswept dunes. Reginald Gaze shows one of the chicks close up to a group of visiting schoolchildren, whilst other birds protect their eggs closely. The feeding continues, Terns arrive with whitebait to feed the young and one of the wardens displays how chicks eat their small fish whole.

Background Information

Probably features long-term Blakeney warden and noted naturalist Ted Eales, who was warden there in the 1960s and '70s, and was often accompanied by Springer Spaniels. Reginald Gaze was a renowned local wildlife photographer and author of several bird books in the 1940s. He was also one of the wardens at Blakeney Point, working there for many years alongside Ted Eales. He also assisted in setting up the bird dioramas in the Norfolk Room in the Castle Museum, Norwich.
