Report on a booming Christmas despite national austerity

Views of the crowded Cambridge marketplace including charity collector Snowy Farr. Cars wait at a full car park. Guy Michelmore reports from inside a busy Debenhams department store to find out how successful Christmas has been so far. He speaks to a senior member of staff, who says that the last week was the biggest week they have ever achieved. Some departments have been more successful than others; particularly minor electrical goods, toys and cosmetics. Michelmore asks his opinion on why shoppers are arriving in such large numbers despite the current economic climate. He says he hopes it continues into the next year. Michelmore continues on to ask various shoppers about their reasoning for spending so much during the recession. One woman hopes for an increase in wages, while another says that she isn't cutting back because her purchases are half price. Michelmore suggests that people are spending as if it is their last Christmas.
