An Anglia Television profile of the coastguard service in North Norfolk.
Beginning at Cromer, where coastguards keep watch over the pier and out to sea, this Anglia Television production profiles the work of the H.M Coastguard along the North Norfolk coast. A district headquarters led by Mr Threlfall, Cromer houses a listening watch, collecting weather reports from lightships and monitoring for distress signals, as well as a wide array of lifesaving apparatus. The Cromer station is supported by substations at Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley Next The Sea, each staffed by a pair of resident coastguards who use lookout points to monitor large stretches of coast, and are supported in an emergency by supplementary watchers. Back at Cromer, a distress message has been received, and the voluntary lifeboat crew - mostly local fishermen - are alerted by balloon rockets and rush to the station to man a lifeboat named in honour of Cromer's most famous coxswain, Henry Blogg. With the crew ready in minutes, the lifeboat is launched and another distress call is answered by Her Majesty's Coastguard.
