A news report looking at racial attacks in Luton.

An ITV Anglia report about racism in Luton. Tony Adams introduces the piece, which was produced in response to a Home Office report regarding the problem of racially-motivated attacks in British society. The report features an interview with the Asian Luton citizen Mumtaz Tahir, who has been on the receiving end of racist abuse and claims that this is endemic in Luton. In addition, there are interviews with a number of Luton officials. Humayun Akhtar, from the Luton Community Relations Council, talks about the sorts of attacks some citizens have received – for example, being told to “go home”. Police Superintendent Roger Wood is interviewed, and he claims that is Bedfordshire Police policy to monitor and log all reports of racial attacks. Tahir, however, clearly feels that the police are not doing enough. There are scenes of children playing rounders in a school playground – this gives a small insight into the racial diversity of Luton at the time. There is also a shot of racist graffiti in Luton; across a person’s gate are scrawled the words, “I got here first".
