Oyster Industry On The Mersea Island

1976 , Mersea Island (Essex)

Anglia Television report on Mersea Island's popular delicacy.

Douglas Mussett, known on Mersea Island as the “oyster king”, tucks into the local delicacy. Plates of oysters are displayed, and Mr Mussett is seen carrying crates of oysters to the fishing shed. Judy Finnigan interviews Mr Mussett, asking about claims that the oyster is an aphrodisiac. Mr Mussett then demonstrates the best way to prepare and eat an oyster. Maria Mussett opens the shell of several oysters and describes the variety of ways an oyster can be cooked and prepared as part of a meal, arguing they are a versatile food, although admits that oyster traditionalists may disagree. Douglas Mussett sorts a tray of oysters. A final shot shows Mr Mussett eating yet more oysters from their shells.
