In 1980, Ferry Meadows Country Park in Peterborough becomes home to the first National Dyke Jumping Championships. The Fenland sport, which some describe as just plain daft, attracts a swathe of competitors, who attempt to pole-vault across a five metre narrow waterway. All get a soaking, plunging into the cold and muddy water, but that’s all part of the fun - with whoops, cheers, and a few groans from the crowds. Anglia Television news reporter Guy Michelmore chats to a competitor. Special guest, former professional boxer, Dave “Boy” Green declares the competition open, before attempting his own dyke jump. Brief interview with the competition organiser Martin Armstrong. The competition winner Chris Douse receives a trophy and speaks to Guy Michelmore. Finally, true to modern news broadcasting tradition and have-a-go reporting, Guy Michelmore attempts a dyke jump. More competitors take turns over the dyke.
