The Duke of Edinburgh visits Whipsnade Zoo for its 50th birthday
The Duke of Edinburgh stands looking at a stall for the British Society. Elephants are handed branches by a zookeeper. The camera pans across a flamboyance of flamingos standing in a field. Prince Philip continues to browse the exhibit, turning to speak to Lord Buxton who replies that it is a success, and very well-run. The camera shows a close-up of a photograph in the collection of the Duke himself, taking pictures in the Galapagos Islands. Victor Manton, the Curator of the zoo is interviewed, saying that Whipsnade will continue its successful breeding policy. He discusses attendance figures, educational programmes and conservation aims for the future.

Background Information
Prince Philip's visit to the Galapagos Islands gave his name to Prince Philip's Steps, a steep rock formation on the Genovesa Island. Lord Buxton was a Director of Anglia Television and had a great interest in wildlife. The Curator of Whipsnade, Victor Manton, later had a giraffe named after him who hit headlines when he fell into a splits position and eventually died after being unable to get up.
