Scenes of speed skating on a frozen Baston Fen.
Beneath a clear blue sky, people are skating on the ice formed over the flooded fen. A race track has been marked out. A wooden sledge is used to clear and smooth the surface, three people pulling and two steering. Two competitors speed skate around the track. This film accompanied an Anglia Television news story transmitted 20 February 1978.

Background Information
Baston Fen is part of the 17th century Counter Drain washlands, an area used to hold floodwater during winter months when high levels in the River Glen would be dispersed onto the washes to prevent bank collapse and flooding of farmland. Traditionally, during the summer months, washlands were grazed, mainly by cattle, or used for haymaking, and this practice continued at Baston Fen.
