The Mayor of Ipswich marks the success of the Ipswich speedway team.

At Ipswich speedway, John Louis shakes hands with Peter Collins, speedway rider for the Belle Vue team against whom the Witches are about to compete and win. Ipswich riders are lined up with their bikes as the Mayor of Ipswich, Mrs Beryl James, presents John Louis for the team with a commemorative plaque for winning the British league title in the past season. Riders are then seen on the floodlit circuit.

Background Information

Ipswich Witches won the League championship for the second year running in 1976. The team was John Louis (Captain), Colin Cook, Tony Davey, Dave Gooderham, Andy Hines, Ted Howgego, Kevin Jolly, Mike Lanham and Billy Sanders. Ron Bagley was team manager and John Berry promoter. John "Tiger" Louis, born 14 June 1941, is an England international motorcycle speedway rider who rode for Ipswich, Newport, West Ham, Oxford, Wembley, Halifax and King's Lynn during his career. Mrs Beryl James served as Mayor of Ipswich 1975-76 and 1982-83.
