Anglia Television interview with Lord Cranbrook on the subject of equal pay and the emancipation of women.

A woman interviewer asks John Gathorne-Hardy, the 4th Earl of Cranbrook, his views on the subject of equal pay for women. Lord Cranbrook replies that he thinks young men marry very young these days and most young women get married. Therefore, he would not pay the younger women the same as the men until it was quite clear that they are going to make the particular profession their job in life. The interviewer suggests that Lord Cranbrook doesn’t agree that a young woman, even if she’s doing the same work as an older man with the same responsibilities, should receive equal pay. Lord Cranbrook replies that he’d like to see the money that he would save on the young women to be paid out in marriage allowances or children’s allowances to the young men. When a girl decides at 30 to make it her career instead of getting married, then she will get equal pay as she will have the same responsibilities as men. They discuss the anomalies which will arise if the policy of equal pay were achieved. Interviewer talks about social reforms and the increasing numbers of women entering the professions once inclusive to men, such as medicine and law. Lord Cranbrook replies that once women have determined on a career then they should be paid the same as men. When asked if he is free from prejudice, he admits that he can’t say he is free from it as he doesn’t think anyone is.
