Anglia TV news item; comedian Ken Dodd greases up novice swimmer Bill Pickering for a long-distance swim.

A large crowd surrounds Bill Pickering, a novice swimmer who is getting ready to swim The Wash. Wearing a towel around his neck and a duffel bag over his shoulder, Bill smiles as he shakes hands with comedian Ken Dodd. The crowd waves to the camera. Standing by the edge of the water, Ken Dodd greases up Bill by spreading it onto his chest. Bill is wearing his swim cap in preparation for the swim. He then jumps into the water and the film ends with Bill swimming breaststroke with the shore behind him.

The Wash is the square-mouthed bay and estuary at the north-west corner of East Anglia on the East coast of England, where Norfolk meets Lincolnshire. Perhaps this was a practice swim to Scroby Sands, or a publicity opportunity, as Great Yarmouth is not on The Wash.
