Announcement of the Bradwell proposal as one of four sites to be surveyed.
Views of the nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex and surrounding fields. Anglia TV reporter Rebecca Atherstone explains that UK Nirex Ltd want to survey 525 acres of this land next to the power station. If found suitable they would plan to use about 200 acres for disposal of low level and intermediate level radioactive waste. Views of a metal waste drum and two illustrations of the proposal for disposal in a deep trench repository on the site. About 2 or 3 acres of land would be occupied each year and the waste would arrive in the weekly equivalent of 40 lorries, 2 or 3 trains or 1 ship. View of passing ships across the fields from Bradwell Power Station. Nirex are prepared to spend £1 million in an area chosen for disposal and have dismissed the suggestion that this is a form of bribery. Tom McInerney, Managing Director of UK Nirex Ltd, is seen addressing a press conference in Bradwell. Interviewed, he says that Nirex’s safety record is unrivalled and no one has been killed by radioactivity in 30 years. Challenged on the perception of a lack of consultation, he states that Nirex planned to announce the four sites to be surveyed on 25 February, so the consultation is now beginning and the leak of information ahead of the announcement was unfortunate. The reporter says she has met no one yet in favour of the plan, and he replies that the Nirex proposal should be given a fair hearing, and the case in favour should be easy to understand. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
