News story about missed opportunities to convert a Wellingborough building into a Hindu community centre.

The reporter for this Anglia Television news story says that the Hindu population of the town has doubled to 3,000 over the past seven years. The Hindu Association are seeking a building to meet social needs such as care for the elderly, school nurseries and youth groups. They considered the former Co-operative Bakery but the Council denied planning permission due to inadequate vehicle parking. An application to develop a former shoe factory was denied on the same grounds. The Association appealed successfully to the Department of the Environment, but in the meantime the factory building was sold to a property developer for house building. Sharm Naib, Chairman of the Hindu Association, says they are seeking compensation from the Council on the grounds of negligence because the opportunity to convert a suitable building was lost, and the cost will be greater in future. Councillor Glyn Addis, Chair of the Planning Committee, says that citizens can bring such a case to court but he is not aware of a successful precedent.
