CPL Aromas was founded in 1971 by brothers Terry and Michael Pickthall as Contemporary Perfumers Limited in the UK and would become the largest fragrance-only fragrance company in the world. Barrington Hall became the company headquarters from 1977.

Scenes without commentary filmed for a television news story. Exterior view of Barrington Hall at Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, headquarters of Contemporary Perfumers Limited. The camera closes in on a window in an ivy-clad wall. Interior view of brothers Terry and Michael Pickthall sitting in the window discussing perfume samples arranged on a table. View of perfume bottles on shelves. In a laboratory, two women are pouring samples seen in glass flasks. A man operates a machine which produces cakes of soap. An array of soaps in different colours. A man carries out a sniff test on shoe insoles sprayed with perfume. A woman conducts a man to a row of doors with small windows which are opened in turn so he can sample the smell of air fresheners. Back at the table in the window, the two men continue to discuss the perfumes. Michael Pickthall explains that he is lucky to have a good sense of smell and throughout each day he is honing that sense and broadening his knowledge. He is very aware of the fragrances around him, for example in a field, or in a kitchen where he can be critical of some cooking odours. More scenes of work in the laboratory and the array of perfume bottles. Asked about popular opinion that perfumes in the cosmetic industry are overpriced and a con, Terry Pickthall disagrees and argues that a bottle of perfume can be purchased for two pounds which will enhance the wearer and the people around them. The reporter was Jeremy Payne for this video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
