Careers project for school leavers focuses on employers and youth training schemes.

This short report begins and ends with images of young people coming and going from their secondary school. Reporter Surrey Beddows introduces Job Search ’86 which concentrates on finding work for young people who have just left school or completed youth training schemes. A Norfolk County Council careers officer arrives to visit a Norwich company, Embassy Camp and Leisure Ltd, which manufactures camping equipment supplied to the Ministry of Defence. Managing Director Douglas Plumb speaks of his difficulty in getting information about youth employment schemes but says that from next week they will be engaging two youngsters with disabilities for the first time, to gain experience over six weeks. Job Search aims to improve communication with employers about school and training qualifications, the training schemes available and the financial incentives to recruit young people. Employees seen carrying out varied work inside the factory include young women who previously completed a YTS scheme offered by Norwich City Council. Others were recruited through careers officers, or by simply knocking on the door and asking for work. Works Manager Joe Wood says that many of the processes can be carried out by young people. Sewing machinists tend to be more experienced older workers, but a young woman of Asian heritage seen working at a sewing machine had tuition from the training centre and is already a mainline machinist. Job Search week aims to increase awareness amongst companies and young people. Careers officer Dominic Low says there is strong evidence that good training and immediate employment when young people leave school will set them up well for their careers. The worry is when a young person does not find work or a place on a training scheme because it becomes more difficult to get started later on. This video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
