Film of a local accident and a staged accident involving flasks designed for nuclear waste.

Brief scenes of a truck by the side of the road where road improvements are in progress. Views of a lorry with a long purpose-designed trailer to carry nuclear flasks. Close-up of sign for radioactive substances. Scenes from Anglia film library of a staged railway crash of an engine pulling a train with flames and smoke on impact. These shots were put together to illustrate a news item that a lorry carrying a nuclear waste flask, presumably from Bradwell nuclear power station, had collided with a stationery vehicle near Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.

Additional Description

The scenes of the train crash were probably filmed in July 1984 when British Railways and the Central Electricity Generating Board arranged a test to prove the safety of transporting nuclear waste by train. An engine running at over 100 miles per hour ran into an empty nuclear flask positioned across the rail track in front an audience of press reporters, cameras and other observers. The test crash took place on the Old Dalby Test Track at Old Dalby, Leicestershire. https://www.railwaymagazine.co.uk/25694/from-the-archive-operation-smash-hit-84/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY446h4pZdc
