Farmer says there is an alternative to straw burning pollution, at a price.

Scenes of Oliver Walston walking around his Cambridgeshire farmyard with his dog. He is interviewed by Anglia TV reporter Chris Young. Oliver Walston says the amount of pollution from straw burning in the form of soot and smoke is intolerable to the public, though he does not agree with the view of some farm workers and firemen that farmers are being irresponsible. He disagrees with the view recently expressed by Michael Jopling MP, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, that there is no alternative straw burning. Oliver Walston says there is no cheap alternative, but farmers around Europe manage without polluting the world by straw burning. He says it has been a particularly difficult year with hot, dry weather and a lot of wind. Asked about alternatives, he says that next year he will need to buy machines to attach to combine harvesters which will chop up the straw so it can be ploughed into the field. It will require additional money, time and effort.
