Organ Assembly

1970 , Soham (Cambridgeshire)

Soham Village College students clean, assemble and fine tune an organ for St Nicholas Church, Kennett, Cambridgeshire.

Scenes of Soham Village College students working on assembly of an organ for St Nicholas Church, Kennett in a project led by Norman Sykes and Peter D. Scott. Opens with a jaunty organ soundtrack in the background (that continues throughout the film) and an opening shot of Soham Village College. Cut to an interior shot of teenage boy students wearing aprons. They are carefully and lovingly stacking large organ pipes against a wall. A boy packs smaller pipes into a box and gently layers newspaper on top of them, whilst two more boys bring in another box of pipes. One of the boys picks up a section of organ and blows into it, then we cut to four of the boys polishing the keyboard and wooden case of the organ. Cut to an exterior shot of Kennett church tower, which pans down to the church entrance. A church door open seemingly by itself, reveals a boy helping to install the organ. A close-up of the organ frontage pulls out to reveal a boy fine-tuning the smallest organ pipes while an older man tests the keyboard. Other boys sit on a pew, nodding along to the music as the organist plays.
