A Day In The Life Of New Buckenham
1993 , New Buckenham (Norfolk)
Cat no. 1674
A typical day for the local residents and businesses in the village of New Buckenham.
The sun rises over the village of New Buckenham where the streets are empty. A new day begins with a paperboy making a delivery, a newsagent serving his customers and a man washing his car. People get on a double-decker bus heading for Norwich and a baker retrieves bread and pastries from an oven. Parents say goodbye to the children who leave on the school bus. Several of the local residents are seen in and around the village, chatting with a neighbour at the post office. The typical activity of the local businesses is then focused upon; at the Marsh Lane Piggeries, then Bakehouse Pottery, followed by the Basketmakers, Mace’s family-run Butchers and Castle Hill Garage. Returning to the local residents; these tend to their gardens and builders repair a building. At lunchtime, customers chat and enjoy a drink at the Kings Head pub, whilst the builders enjoy their lunch on the village green and Brian’s fish and chip van arrives in the village. The interior of St. Martin’s church receives a spring clean, and a lady gets a haircut in Quicksnip’s. A return to the butchers, and a demonstration of sausage making and tying. Parents welcome the return of children from the school bus. Cars are serviced at Mill House garage, meanwhile children play in the park and later workers return on the bus from Norwich. It’s now nearing the end of the day at New Buckenham and closing time for the local grocers. Inside St. Martins are the bell ringers. At the George Pub, regulars are at the bar whilst the local drama society meet in the function room of the Kings Head Public House where the local players audition for the Christmas pantomime, The Sleeping Beauty.
