The Mast Breaks On The Wherry Albion

The wherry 'Albion' is filmed sailing on the broads, possibly at Beccles and then entering Yarmouth harbour.

The wherry ties up and the Wherryman lowers the mast. The next sequence shows the 'Albion' passing under Haven Bridge and past R.H. Porter Ltd timber yard and RH Clarke's flour mill at Southtown. The wherry is drifting on the tide. The mast has to be taken down to go under Haven Bridge. A weight on a chain keeps the wherry straight. A crew member on board smokes a cigarette. A scene shows the wherrymen loading planks of wood. During these scenes the Breydon viaduct can be seen in the background. The third sequence shows the 'Albion' sailing up the River Yare. Suddenly the mast breaks. The final sequence shows rescue boats rushing out to bring the crew ashore.

Background Information

The Breydon Viaduct was replaced by a road bridge in 1986. The viaduct could take ten minutes to open or close; the road bridge takes 90 seconds.
