Unveiling ceremony for the memorial to the fallen in the Great War.

The film opens with shots of the large crowd gathered in the market square to witness the unveiling of the Whittlesey war memorial. Young people edge along sideways to remain in shot as the camera pans. Some people are holding wreaths. The memorial is covered with a Union Jack over the statue, and chairs are arranged on a dais ready for the ceremony. The Brigadier General stands with notable local people and walks along a line of men, then stops to converse. A row of men and women with children stand ready to lay their wreaths. The memorial is unveiled. Umbrellas are raised as it is raining. Standing with others on the dais, the Brigadier General dons a coat. The wreaths are laid at the foot of the memorial.

Background Information

Funded by public subscription, the memorial was manufactured by Mr T. W. Ford. Made in Portland Stone, it depicts the figure of St. George atop a defeated dragon, facing the direction in which the fallen soldiers departed the town.
