Terling Pictures No. 2

Agriculture in Terling including ploughing, sheep shearing, milking and a ploughing competition.

The first sequence introduces the idea that the work of the village is directly and indirectly connected to agriculture. A horse-drawn plough prepares the ground at Bury Farm. A woman follows setting potatoes. A brief shot shows men sawing a log by hand with a cross cut saw. A man shears a sheep using hand clippers outside a barn. In a field a group of shearers shear sheep using clippers powered by a hand operated Bowden cable. The sheep are in the field behind them penned in by wooden hurdles. There are shots of some dogs. The second sequence shows ploughing, using a horse-drawn plough, at Fordings. Women and then men pick peas at Whitelands. Men load straw onto a wagon. There is a close-up shot of the steam engine being used for steam ploughing. There are shots of the plough working across the field. Men ride on the back. The final shots of this sequence show the living quarters of the engine operator. There are interior shots showing the living accommodation. The third sequence begins with shots on Church Green, Terling. There are shots of men clearing the road. A man with a hand cart delivers milk to the dairy. On Whitelands cows are milked by hand. A long sequence shows an Express Dairies, a modern dairy at Hatfield Peverel. There are a mixture of exterior and interior shots of the dairy. The milk arrives by a variety of lorries and a hand cart. There are shots of the automated bottling plant, of the cooler and of technicians testing samples in the laboratories. Crates of bottles are loaded onto a train. There are shots of the railwaymen. The next scenes show a cultivator and a drill at work. Both are horse-drawn. There are shots of a steam threshing machine. There is a static shot of a poster advertising the Ploughing match. This reads as follows: Terling Pictures No. 2. Fourth Annual Ploughing Match. To be held at the Lodge Gates, Terling (by kind permission of Lord Rayleigh's Farms), On Saturday, October 22, 1938. Commencing at 10.30am. There are shots of the ploughing match. Most of the competitors are driving horse-drawn ploughs. One is tractor ploughing. There are shots of the crowd and of the prize giving.
