Scenes of everyday family life in Norwich in 1938

The first scenes in this compilation are believed to have been shot at Woodrow Pilling Park at Thorpe, near Norwich. A toddler, possibly male, runs around. There are other children present and they are playing with a woman. An older child, a girl, rides a tricycle along a path. The shot pulls back to reveal a woman pushing a pram and the toddler running along. The toddler runs towards the camera. The girl is on a swing in the trees and there are further shots of the toddler running around. Many titles follow but with no pictures to accompany them. The next scenes show two older boys in a garden. They fight. A 12 day old baby, Keith Barry, is pictured in the arms of an ample woman who may be a nurse. She is pictured with the two older boys who wave to the camera. A kitten plays in the garden.A shot shows a posed family group of several generations. The boys play with their dog and there are further pictures of kittens playing. A man on a beach pushes a pram and there are scenes of a ball game. This takes place at the foot of some cliffs, suggesting that these may be shot near Cromer. The final scenes are taken in the countryside. A woman stands near a gate and then the boys come down a land accompanied by a man who appears to be their grandfather. There is a brief shot of the family group to close.

Background Information

Woodrow Pilling Park at Thorpe, was opened on 29th June 1929 by Princess Mary, Viscountess Lascelles. The Archive has a film of HRH at the Jenny Lind Hospital during that day. (See: Norwich, Norfolk. Princess Mary At The Jenny Lind Hospital. 1929.) An intertitle refers to Corting. We think this may mean Corton.
