Newsreel about RAF members in North Weald, 1945

A newsreel story which opens with shots of RAF officers at the aerodrome at North Weald meeting Lord Dowding, the Commander of the RAF forces at the Battle of Britain. Some of those meeting Lord Dowding include Group Captain Thompson and Wing Commanders Ellis and Wells. This scene is followed by a shot of the Memorial Chapel at Biggin Hill before returning to North Weald aerodrome. Here Group Captain Bader, a former prisoner of war, gets into his Spitfire to lead the flypast over London. He takes off and there are shots of the planes in the air. As they fly over London we see aerial shots of the capital including Tower Bridge and St. Paul's Cathedral. In Trafalgar Square, crowds watch the flypast. This is part of the Thanksgiving Week that included a savings campaign. The film ends with part of a speech by the Prime Minister, Clement Attlee.

Background Information

The Battle of Britain lasted between August and October 1940. 2,375 German aircraft are known to have been destroyed, not including those that were damaged beyond return to the homeland. The RAF lost 375 pilots killed and 358 wounded. By day 1,700 civilians were killed and 3,360 were wounded. At night 12, 581 persons were killed and 16, 965 wounded.
