After-care service is provided by Dr. Barnardo's homes in all areas where our senior boys and girls work. Our family numbers about 7,000 children and many hundreds either go onto out training schools or leave the homes for situations, or to train for careers or professions. After preliminary discussions with the boy or girl regarding the choice of career, the Welfare Officer sees them settled in the career they have chosen. Constant attention is given in every case to ensure, as far as possible, that all is well with them. If the first choice proves to be unsuitable, a change is arranged. Our camera has pictured just a few of these seniors in situations or in training. Our welfare officer for this area is seen in his office with some of the lads who have come to visit him. Here we will see two boys being shown the locality in which their work will lie, and being given advice on savings. Opportunity is provided for informal chats, for meeting other boys and for private talks on personal matters. Boys and girls can always rely on the Welfare Officer as a friend and advisor. Pamela and Diana Call on their welfare officer. David is happily settled on a farm. He lives nearby. Peter also favours the open air life. Bert hopes to become a chef. He is serving a five year apprenticeship. Brian likes strawberries! His work at the Kesgrave Fruit Farm also includes planting potatoes, pruning fruit trees and driving a tractor. John is also on a farm. Several of our boys are training at Ransomes Mower and Plough Works. An official discusses maintenance matters with one of our old boys. Michael has comfortable accommodation and cycles to work. Allan and Michael are at Messrs Cattermole Bros. Michael is serving an apprenticeship as a wood-carver and cabinet maker.
