Educational film looking at children's relationships with animals and wildlife through the fictional story of small girl's birthday.

The story of Susan's birthday begins with the postman arriving on his bike with birthday cards. Susan is waiting for him. She shows the cards to her mother, and then looks through her presents. She sets off for the primary school, feeding a bird in the garden. At the gate she meets her father who has bought her a blue budgie in a cage. At the village school, the children look at Susan's cards. They all go into the classroom for a writing lesson. At mid-day, Gwen Dunn, the head teacher, serves school dinners. After school, at home with her budgie, Susan accidentally sets it free. Children are playing games in the playground. They leave the school for a nature walk with their head teacher. They see fledgling birds being fed, find owl pellets and catch small fish in a stream. They also see Bladder Campion, swans and a moorhen's nest. Finally, they see Susan's budgie, which is tempted back into its cage.
