A Market Town

1975 , Sudbury (Suffolk)

Educational film looking at Sudbury, its people, shops and industries, and at how some of the town has changed.

Scenes of the vegetable market, the livestock market with pigs and cattle, and the auctioning of live animals and carcasses. The town's ancient streets, including Weavers' Lane, and old buildings provide a contrast to the modern shops, the Borehamgate shopping centre, the car parks and the bus station. Aerial views of the town reveal the surrounding marshes, housing estates and the River Stour and its bridge. At a silk mill, weaving machines are in operation. In a computerised factory, engine parts are produced. At the end of the day workers leave the factory on foot and in cars. Finally, a look at how buildings have changed: the Corn Exchange - now the town library, the mill, a hotel, a river warehouse and Sudbury Maltings.
