Local amateur film maker, George Wilden, records the carnival procession and other festivities in Stowmarket in 1948.
Crowds, near the traffic lights in Stowmarket: the carnival procession passes the market place during the carnival week of June 19th – 27th; it includes bands and floats, one of which advertises Eastern Electricity. In the recreation ground the Carnival Queen, Miss Sheila Morgan, is crowned. A small girl sings on a stage, probably in the Regal cinema. Two other acts follow. The annual baby show takes place at the rear of Constitution Hall in Milton Road with the Carnival Queen in attendance. There is a children's fancy dress show inside the hall, a fashion show put on by William Turner's Department Store and a carnival grand dance. Finally, the film shows the annual Christmas dinner at Stowe Lodge Hospital, followed by scenes in the nursery in Violet Hill Road.
