Car Trip Through Norwich
1950 , Norwich (Norfolk)
Cat no. 908
A film made for the City Engineer's Department to help plan a road widening scheme for Norwich.
Views of Norwich streets are filmed through the windscreen of a moving car, starting down Stephen Street and into the city, along Castle Meadow, Redwell Street, down St Andrew's Hill, into Charing Cross and through St Benedict's. The car proceeds along St Augustine's into the city at Charing Cross, up Exchange Street, along the Walk and right, into Theatre Street. Continuing up Earlham Road, the car turns right at the Roman Catholic cathedral and then left into Chapelfield North, past the park, down Theatre Street and Rampant Horse Street. The journey continues along Crown Street, left and right into Bank Plain, right again and left into Upper King Street and Tombland. Then, down Magdalen Street towards Stump Cross and Magdalen Gates. The route is shown back into the city. Finally, the car follows the route along Riverside Road towards the bottom of Kett's Hill, over the bridge near Fishergate towards St Martin Palace Plain. Shops, pedestrians, buses, posters and other vehicles are all clearly visible. Some derelict buildings, possibly war damaged, are also seen.
