The Broads Authority
1984 - 1986 , Norfolk Broads (Norfolk)
Cat no. 897
The problems facing the Norfolk Broads, and how solutions are planned and implemented by the Broads Authority.
Popular broadcaster and naturalist, Ted Ellis stands in front of a punt. He describes the Broads area and its history, from the time of the wherries to modern day boat hire, the problems of pollution and of maintenance. An excerpt from the film, 'A Day On The Broads 1929' shows how the tourist industry has gathered pace. Lord Hunt talks about national parks and why the Broads were left out. A Broads Authority meeting is shown, and the work at University of East Anglia to try solve the Broad's water problems. At Cockshoot Broad, we see how the water has cleared and the returning plant life. Pollution is tackled at the Stalham sewage works, and erosion is explained. Traditional industries are featured such as reed cutting. The importance of wildlife is illustrated, and the importance of maintaining the quality of the environment by clearing an overgrown fen, restoring a windpump and rebuilding a bridge. Other Authority projects are shown. The problems of stubble burning and the ploughing up of marsh are addressed. At Brundall, school children learn about the Broads' problems. A Manpower Services team of youngsters make an access road. A compilation of images ends this section of the film. The update, made in 1986, shows the Hoveton Information Centre, a new series of schools' fact packs, the centre at How Hill and a Broads Authority estate. The resurgence of wildlife and a restored grazing marsh highlight the success of Authority plans.
