The Norfolk Wherries Sail Again
1949 , Norfolk Broads (Other)
Cat no. 895
A film documenting the ceremonial journey of the Wherry Albion on the Broads following its preservation by the Norfolk Wherry Trust.
A black-sailed Norfolk trader, the Wherry Albion passes The Lord Nelson Public House at Reedham on the Norfolk Broads, journeying from Great Yarmouth to Norwich. The ceremonial trip celebrates the recent restoration of the historic Norfolk Trading Wherry by the charity The Norfolk Wherry Trust. At Hardley Cross, which marks the historic boundary separating the borough of Great Yarmouth and the city of Norwich, the city’s Mayor joins the Mayor of Yarmouth, Trustee Lady Mayhew and guests for a celebratory lunch. Professional wherrymen, skipper Jack Cates and skippers mate and brother George Cates are presented with official sweatshirts by the Trust. The Mayoral party and guests continue their ceremonial journey along the Broads on the wherry Albion, with skipper Jack taking the helm. The Norfolk Trading Wherry would continue from this day as a trading wherry carrying cargo for businesses from Yarmouth to Norwich and from Surlingham to Cantley.
