Turf Celebrities No. 1
1956 , Newmarket (Suffolk)
Cat no. 872
Documentary about horse-racing, looking at some of the horses, jockeys and trainers who contribute to the popular spectacle.
A packed stand at Newmarket race course, the horses at the starting line are given the 'off'. Racing is at the heart of this small, world famous, Suffolk town, housing the Headquarters of the Jockey Club. Jockey, Doug Smith rides 'Acropolis' and W. H. Carr poses for the camera outside Freemason's Lodge. Trainers Walter Nightingale, Harry Wragg, Jack Jarvis, and Captain Boyd-Rochfort are present at their stables. Famous horses are also featured: 'Mighty Mo', 'Immortal' and 'Marse'. Among the lesser-acknowledged, stable lads and other hands collect their wages from a table set up in a yard. The final sequence moves to Epsom. The famous tipster, Ras Prince Monolulu, makes an appearance complete with feathered head dress. A fictional, 'comic' punter is introduced, who after a visit to the pawnbroker, loses all his money on a horse.
