King's Lynn Charter Pageant

1954 , King's Lynn (Norfolk)

A film recording the pageant in St. James' Park in June 1954, in which significant events from the town's history are performed by a large cast.

In preparation for the pageant, actors, dressed as medieval folk, knights, monks and dignitaries move to take up their places in The Walks (an earlier urban promenade adjacent to St. James' Park). Historical scenes are acted out, some in front of the Red Mount Chapel. There are knights on horseback and a procession with banners and clerics. The film ends with a ceremony and crowd scenes which include dancing, horse parading, and punishment in the stocks. There were about 1000 performers and some 50 horses taking part in front of the large audience gathered for the event.
