Holiday Camp For The Physically Disabled

1956 , Gorleston (Norfolk)

A record of a week long holiday for disabled people and their carers organised by the Norfolk Voluntary Association for the Physically Disabled.

A brief view of the beach and the holidaymakers arrive at Gorleston Super Holiday camp. A steam train pulls into Vauxhall station, Yarmouth and members of the group are helped out in cots and wheelchairs. Others arrive in buses, cars and vans. The guests arrive at the main camp building, and the mayor chats outside with the organisers. Cooks lay out a buffet and everyone sits down for a meal. Table games and bowls are played, promenade walks are taken. Various excursions to Potter Heigham, Wroxham, Somerleyton and a Broads cruise are shown. Other outings follow the mayor's tea party: a visit to Raveningham Hall; a trip on a light aircraft; a cruise on the "Queen of the Broads" at Yarmouth with views of Breydon water, its bridge and various windmills. The film closes with an exhibition of aids for disabled living set up by the Central Council for the Care of Cripples. The guests board their transport home and the camp staff wave goodbye.
