Essex
c. 1955 , Essex (County)
Cat no. 765
A short film for theatrical release looking at the historic sites and buildings of Essex.
A tour of the county of Essex, visiting notable historic buildings; in particular those made of wood in a county which has no local stone. Beginning at Chigwell, the gabled King's Head dates back to Stuart times and the Monks Barn at Newport displays some curious carvings. Paycockes at Coggeshall is Tudor, as is The Sun Inn at Saffron Walden. Thaxted Guildhall dates back to James I era. Numerous windmills cover the county – these are contrasted with the petrol refining and cement works of the twentieth century. A cockle stall at Leigh-on-Sea represents another important industry. Like many of the county's villages, Finchingfield has not changed for centuries. Other sites visited include: Greensteads wooden Saxon church; St. Peter's on the Wall, Bradwell; the Priory of St. Osyth; Colchester's St John's gate and city walls, the Abbey and the Priory; Coggeshall Abbbey; Waltham Abbey; Castle Hedingham; Hadleigh Castle; the site of the custom of the 'Dunmow Flitch''; Tilbury docks and fort; and finally London's nearest seaside town, Southend-on-Sea.
