Cromer Crabs
1973 , Cromer (Norfolk)
Cat no. 750
An educational film about crab fishing at Cromer.
The modern crab boats on the shore at Cromer are compared with stills of 19th century fishermen. At sea the crew of a crab boat is skippered by Richard Davies. A dan buoy and shanks of crab pots are hauled on board and the catch of crab and lobster are removed. Small crabs are thrown back. The pots are rebaited with fish and stacked for setting. In a Cromer workshop, a traditional crabpot is contructed. Back on the boat the baited pots are set again. Lobster and crabs are graded against a special gauge. Crabs are processed by submerging in warm water; they are scrubbed, cooked and left to cool. The final sequence shows a woman dressing a crab.
