[Redisham]

1975 , Redisham (Suffolk)

BBC East profile of the village of Redisham.

The film opens with shots of Redisham and of a sign post at a 'T' junction in the village. This is signed to Ringsfield and Beccles (4 miles), Brampton and Southwold (8 1/2 miles) and Brexhall, Halesworth and Bungay (7 miles.) A girl rides a horse through the village. Jean Goodman visits the old Vicarage with author Adrian Bell. He was brought up in the vicarage. He wrote a book, `Apple Acre', about his time in Redisham. Mrs. McDaniel, the present owner, opens the door. There are shots of the acre of apple trees which Adrian Bell helped to plant as a boy, which gave its name to his book. In the village there are shots of the former village store, now a private house and of the former village school. This became a private house and is now empty. In their cottage Jean Goodman and Adrian Bell meet Clarence and Mrs. Scarle, who feature in Apple Acre. There are some shots of boys, one of whim is the Scarles' grandson, picking apples. John Foster, who came to Redisham as gardener to the M.P. James Prior, explains the attractions of living in the countryside. His two small children play in the garden. Mrs. Pamela Tabelin is filmed feeding a group of cats. Mrs. Tabelin, originally from London, is on the management committee of the Cats Protection League. She explains about her work and is seen with horses and feeding goats. She also has some ferrets and polecats. She shows these to the cameras and talks about them. There is a shot of St. Peter's Church, one of the smallest in Suffolk. Adrian Bell speaks of the changes he has noticed to the village, highlighting the council houses. The final shots are of fields.
