The First Battalion The Suffolk Regiment leaves Kuala Lumpar at the end of its three and a half year service.
This film begins with the procession through Kuala Lumpar to mark the departure of the First Battalion The Suffolk Regiment from Malaya. This followed a tour of service of three and a half years and the defeat of the Communist rebels in February, 1953. The Regiment parade through the streets. General Templar takes the salute as they pass the Secretariat. The commentary announces that some of the Suffolk Regiment will be lining the route of the Coronation. At the Cenotaph the Suffolks line up to remember their dead of past wars. A wreath is laid. As they march to the Cenotaph there are some crowd shots. The regimental colours are marched to the railway station where they are paraded as the regimental march is played. The commentary explains that this ceremony acts as the annual Minden Day Parade, commemorating the battle of Minden 196 years before. The Sultan of Selangor bids farewell to the Suffolks and then it is the turn of General Templar. To the strains of 'Auld Lang Syne' the train pulls out of the station. The soldiers, travelling third class, lean out of the window to shake hands with people on the platform.
