1956 , Ilford (Essex)

The inspection and maintenance of rolling stock at Ilford Electric Train Depot.

Electric multiple units are filmed at a station. There is a steam train in the background. The first part of the film shows the intermediate inspection, carried out every four days. They enter the inspection sheds. Work includes checking the brakes and new brake shoes are fitted to the engine in situ. The commentary explains that these last between 12 and 28 days, depending on the function of the carriage. The wheels and the automatic doors are checked. We see the mechanism inside the guard's van. Cables are checked for wear; axles, pins and linkages are checked for greasing. The pantographs, the electrical mechanism, are overhauled carefully. The train is driven out of the shed to resume service. The second part of the film shows the major overhaul that occurs every four years. The pantograph is removed, the body of the train is lifted from the wheels and the brakes are overhauled. The bogies, the undercarriage of the train, are checked. Wheels are inspected and turned on a lathe. Only 1/8th inch wear is allowed. They are replaced after two years. The compressors receive a detailed check. The train is re-assembled and tested under service conditions. It is washed in an automatic train wash. This is like a car wash only bigger.
