Here And There In East Anglia

Cat no. 551
Three local history stories: The lateener boat, 'Maria', navigation of the River Stour, and the herring industry in Great Yarmouth.
The first item is about the old Broads sailing boat, the lateener 'Maria.' There are shots of the boat in the Maritime Museum at Great Yarmouth and an interview with the naval architect John Perryman who discovered the 'Maria' in an old boatyard in August 1969 and brought her to the museum. Mr. Perryman tells of the history of the boat, generally illustrated by stills with some general river scenes. A replica of the boat is filmed under construction at Lowestoft College of Further Education. The sequence ends with further Broads scenes. The second item concerns the navigation of the River Stour. It begins at Flatford Mill and the lock, traditionally the most inland point of navigation on the Stour. The film shows the tidal river at Manningtree and then at Cattawade Bridge and Brantham Lock. There are shots of the bird life and then the barrage at Cattawade Bridge is shown during construction. This was being built by the Essex River Authority and the South Essex Waterworks Company as part of a scheme for water conservation. However, it would stop navigation on the river. The River Stour Trust's request for a lock was tuned down. There are also fears of the river silting at Manningtree and the final shot of the sequence is of the Estuary here. The final item recalls the herring fishing industry at Great Yarmouth. There are shots of the deserted fish quay and stills showing the quay at the turn of the 20th century. Charlie Moll, previously a fisherman and lightshipman, talks of his days at sea. There are stills of him as a young boy aboard the steam drifter 'Kermoozer' on which he worked. There is archive film of the drifters leaving the harbour and film of the fish quay c. 1935. This shows the crews unloading their catch and the fisher girls at work barrelling and gutting the herring. Over shots of the sea, Mr. Moll offers his ideas about why the herring industry declined.
